EU Adds Iran’s IRGC to Terror List in strong warning

The European Union (EU) has officially labeled Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) a terrorist organization. This move raises international pressure on Tehran after its violent crackdown on nationwide protests.

EU foreign ministers approved the decision in Brussels. They cited human rights abuses, mass arrests, and the deaths of thousands of protesters. Kaja Kallas, EU foreign policy chief, said the move sends a clear message: repression will no longer be tolerated.

The IRGC now joins the EU terror list alongside ISIS and Al-Qaeda. This designation triggers strict legal consequences. It includes asset freezes, travel bans, and criminal penalties for anyone supporting the group within EU member states.

Additionally, the EU imposed new sanctions on 15 Iranian officials and six entities. These targets are linked to censorship, internet shutdowns, and the violent suppression of protests. The total number of sanctioned Iranian individuals and organizations now exceeds 240.

Iran’s foreign ministry condemned the decision, calling it “illegal and provocative.” Meanwhile, Tehran warned it could lead to more regional instability and threatened retaliatory actions. Analysts say this raises concerns about Middle East tensions and global energy markets.

The EU’s move aligns with the United States, Canada, and Australia, which had already labeled the IRGC a terrorist group. Experts say this represents one of Europe’s strongest diplomatic actions against Iran in decades.

Finally, the designation is expected to increase Tehran’s diplomatic isolation. Moreover, it strengthens international efforts to hold Iranian security forces accountable for alleged crimes against civilians.
